Physical and chemical changes Essay Example for Free

Physical and chemical changes Essay Challenge #1 — The Penny Problem: The first challenge to complete is the Penny Problem. The radio station is giving the winner of this challenge a prize pack that includes tickets to see his or her favorite band in concert. To start off the challenge, the radio station has placed pennies in a cylindrical glass jar. Each penny is 0.75 inches in diameter and 0.061 inches thick. If the cylindrical glass jar containing the pennies has a diameter of 6 inches and a height of 11.5 inches, how many pennies can fit inside the jar? You must show all work to receive credit. So first I want to fine what the volume of the jar is so I am going to use or Cubed inches Now we know how much space we have inside the jar. Now we have to find the volume of the pennies. Now you will divide 325 by .33 and we find that there is a total of 985 pennies in the jar. Challenge #2 — Tennis Trouble: Now its time to move on to the second challenge called Tennis Trouble. The second challenge is to figure out how many tennis balls fit in a specially designed container. The radio station will give away a prize pack and a pair of front row tickets to the winner of this challenge! Each tennis ball is 2.63 inches in diameter. A sketch of the specially designed container is below. How many tennis balls can fit inside the container? How many more tennis balls could fit into the container if the container’s dimensions are doubled? You must show all work to receive credit. In order to find the volume of this container we are going to have to use two formulas. The first formula will be so we can find the volume of the cylinder. Now we have to find the volume of the cone And after doing that I find that Now all we have to do is add the two together and we will know the volume of the container. Now we have to find the volume of the tennis balls. In order to find the volume of a tennis ball we have to find the area of it. After doing that I am going to divide 87.9 from 5.43 to find how many tennis balls will fit into the container. So a total of 16 tennis balls would fit into the container. If the containers dimensions were doubled then the number of tennis balls would have probably doubled. Challenge #3 — Giant Gum: The Pharaoh Chewing Gum Company has decided to sponsor an additional prize in the radio stations contest. They are giving away backstage passes for the concert! Pharaoh Chewing Gum manufactures a new product they are trying to promote. The new product is a pyramid-shaped gum with a square base. In the spirit of the other challenges, the company has decided to place their pyramid-shaped gum inside a clear glass giant bubble-gum shaped sphere. Each piece of gum has a base measurement of 1 inch and a height of 0.75 inches. The glass sphere container has a diameter of 17.25 inches. How many pieces of Pharaoh Chewing Gum can fit inside the glass sphere? You must show all work to receive credit. Now to find the volume of the sphere we are going to use So the volume of the sphere is 51.8 inches Finally we have to find the volume of the pyramid gum. Now we go ahead and divide them by each other and find that a total of 207 pieces of gum fit into the sphere. Answering the Questions. 1. For the Penny Problem, how much empty space should exist inside the jar after being filled to capacity with pennies? Why doesnt this amount of space actually exist in the jar? There should only be enough room for there to be about 3 or 4 more penny’s but you would not be able to put them into the jar because the pennies are going everywhere and they jar is not made to form around the pennies. 2. Where does the formula for the volume of a cylinder derive from? Give an example and provide evidence to support your  claim. It derives from the formula of area of a circle the only difference between them is for the cylinder you have to what the height is in order to use the formula. 3. In the Tennis Challenge, a cone was used for calculations, and in Giant Gum, the formula for the volume of a pyramid was needed. Pick either the formula for the volume of a cone or the volume of a pyramid and explain where the formula you chose derives from? Give an example and provide evidence to support your claim. This equation is almost like the formula for the area of a circle crossed with the area of a triangle. The differences between them are that for a circle you don’t have to find the height and you don’t have a fraction and for a triangle you don’t use pie and don’t use the radius and the fraction is not 1/3 it is  ½. 4. In Tennis Trouble, the container used for the challenge is labeled A in the image below. If the container’s shape was modified to look like container B, what effect would it have on the capacity (volume) of the container if the dimensions remained unchanged? What theory or principle helps to prove your point? Nothing because they amount of space has not changed just the way it looks has and the theory that supports this is cavallies principle. 5. In Giant Gum, the gum is shaped like a pyramid. What shape do you think would best fit into the container (choose a shape other than a pyramid). Explain why the shape you chose was better and back up your answer with proof such as calculations and writing. I would thing that balls would best fit into the container because it is shaped as a ball. Also if they were shaped as a ball there wouldn’t have been that much space left in the sphere.

Shawshank Redemption: Critical Analysis of Subcultures

Shawshank Redemption: Critical Analysis of Subcultures Critical Analysis of The Shawshank Redemption The Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 movie written and directed by Frank Darabont, featuring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. The movie is a classic and is considered as one of the all-time best. The principal theme of the movie remains around the life of a prisoner, Andy, and tells us about the various circumstances and adversities faced by him and how does he manage to go through all this. The movie skillfully integrates the representation of harsh realities of the prison world and remains successful to a large extent in conveying the intended message to the viewer as to how brutal and harsh a prisoner’s life can be. The media generally portrays prison as an unpleasant and frightening place, and â€Å"The Shawshank Redemption† is a prime case that backs the medias proposal about jails. In the film, we get acquainted with the character Andy Dufresne, played by Tim Robbins, a banker who is wrongfully sentenced for killing his wife and her lover. He is indicted and is sentenced to serve two lifelong incarcerations consecutively. While attempting to survive and discover his jail personality, he meets and becomes friends with Ellis Boyd Red Redding ,which is played by Morgan Freeman, a vendor, and Brooks Hatlen, played by James Whitmore, another life prisoner, in addition to other detainees. While trying to establish his place in the jail, he develops a kind of business relation with the guards’ in charge named Captain Bryon Hadley, played by Clancy Brown and Samuel Norton, the jail Warden, among several other staff members at the Shawshank jail. The movie provides an insight into several aspects of the life in a prison. These attributes include jail society; particularly the guard subculture and detainee subculture. Likewise, the film also demonstrates the adjustments to the jail’s environment, as start, prisonization or institutionalization and finally rehabilitation. The film also gives a view of the purposes behind utilization of the jail for discipline and how it works as a system. Guard Subculture There are various types of guards in prison; these include the rule enforcer, hard liner, people’s worker, synthetic officer, and loner (Cesaroni, 2009a). The rule enforcer is a quite inflexible guard who is mainly focused on maintaining the control. These types of guards are not much interested in negotiations with the inmates; rather they are more interested in displaying their power and authority over the prisoners. The people worker type guard is an older, more seasoned guard who relies on their verbal skills and common sense instead of physical force. The ‘Synthetic officer’ is a guard who treats the inmate fairly, and follows the rules closely, depending on the situation. The loner type of guard strictly enforces the regulations and is always on the lookout to prove their skills to other guards. The Warden, Samuel Norton, is portrayed as an individuals’ specialist to start with of the movie. This is accepted in light of the fact that the Warden is indicated to be a change oriented person. The Warden is additionally indicated to be a dedicated Christian; in the scene when he is initially acquainted with the gathering of people, he clarifies I put stock in two things, discipline and the biblical canon. However as the film advances we see that the Warden Samuel Norton is an extraordinary sample of the hard liner monitor, because of different activities. The Warden demonstrates his actual nature to be that of a hardliner guard, when he plots to have Tommy Williams slaughtered so Andy does not have a shot of escaping from jail. Another case for the Warden thought to be a hardliner guard is that he is utilizing the detainees as free work, while taking influences from contending offices. The film Shawshank Redemption traces the head guard, Captain Byron Hadley to be a decent outline of the tenet authority. At the point when Captain Hadley is acquainted with the group of onlookers he is hollering at another prisoner You consume when youre advised to consume, you crap when we say you poop, you piss when we say you piss because of the inquiry When do we consume? This delineates that Hadleys part is to implement the guidelines. Hadley delights in being a horrible and amazing guard who appreciates frightfully beating the detainees. The Captain additionally beats another detainee to death on Andys first night in jail. Inmate Subculture Inmate subculture is described as the norms, beliefs, values, ideologies, symbols, and language specific to a group of inmates in prison (Ishwawan Neugebauer, 2001). We will discuss two models for inmate subculture: the deprivation model and the importation model. The Deprivation model suggests that â€Å"the prisoners suffer and get frustrated due to the absence of liberty, privacy, free access to goods and services, heterosexual relationships, autonomy and security† (Stojkovic, Stan Lovell, 1998). This theory clearly says that inmate subculture is evident through the pains of imprisonment. While the importation model says that the subculture is evident because the prisoners are replicating the outside world. This model includes the prisoner-staff dynamic, 3 types of inmates, various racial groups within the prison population, type of offence, record of recidivism (re-offending), personality differences (prior to imprisonment), power of â€Å"politicians† (top of the inmate social hierarchy), work gangs, work groups, and sexual â€Å"deviation† which would directly affect inmate subculture. Both inmate subculture models comprise of a behavior code, a power hierarchy, an economic system for illicit goods and service distributions and â€Å"argot† rules. Argot rules are a set of terms that inmates use to refer to various roles in the prison subculture .The jail language incorporates terms such as fish, rat, gorilla, center-men, merchant, ball buster, tough, real man, wolf, fag and punk. Fish is a new detainee; in the film all the new detainees are called fish by other prisoners. As the new detainees are wandering in, there is another (more seasoned) detainee who is making motions about reeling-in fish. A center-man is a disagreeable prisoner who tries to opportunist with the jail power. In the film, Andy would be a good example as he helps the guards (and the Warden) with their taxes and deals with their cash. However when gotten some information about it, Andy denies the case. Andy is likewise enjoyed by other prisoners, once they get to know him, subsequently he would not be a complete focus man. A rivulet is an alternate illustration of a center man, however in the movie Brooks is well known, and everybody likes him. A merchant is a prisoner who offers things for sale when given the chance, for this situation Red is an impeccable illustration. Red is the fellow that can get it for you, cigs, liquor, anything inside reason. A wolf is a detainee that takes the male part in sexual experiences. These people are exceptionally forceful and are not of gay person introduction outside of jail. In the movie Bogs Diamond the leader of The Sisters group is a good example of this. Prisonization/Institutionalization To really comprehend jail and how it influences the individual Goffman depicted it as an aggregate establishment. An alternate approach to ponder jail is as a position of habitation and work where a substantial number of like-arranged people, cut off from the more extensive society for an obvious time of time, together lead an encased, formally directed round of life. This is in the feeling of the controlling structure and social association in which the jail capacities. Clemmer expresses that prisonization or regulation is the methodology of socialization of a prisoner into the subculture of the jail. This procedure incorporates researching the jails subculture, for example, values, convictions and practices that test the jail staff. Despite the fact that these guidelines and subcultures are set up to restore the guilty party they may fortify a few sorts of freak conduct too. Some individuals who enter jail wont completely receive the jail subculture. People who get tied up with the jail society have a tendency to have longer sentences, flimsy identities and have a tendency to not have powerless associations with individuals on the outside of jail (Cesaroni, 2009b). The people who oppose jail society have a tendency to have shorter sentences, stable identities and genuinely great associations with individuals in the public eye. In the movie, many characters had long sentences and effectively got tied up with the prisonization impact. A prime illustration of that is the character Brooks. Streams was in the jail for a long time, been sent to Shawshank Prison in 1905. He began to consider himself a paramount man inside the jail dividers since he had been accountable for the library since 1912. However he had no significance outside of the jail, and he couldnt get a library card on the off chance that he needed to. Red said all what needed to be said when dis cussing prisonization and the dividers at Shawshank Prison the dividers are clever, first you loathe them, then you get used to them, then you require them. Streams figured out the hard path while on parole, that following 50 years of being in jail and keeping the jail societies he couldnt live in ordinary society any longer. An alternate explanation behind people to get tied up with the prisonization or systematization influences is because of Sykes hardship model (Cesaroni, 2009b). This model expresses that the anxiety and troubles are brought about by the denying states of the jail itself which at last prompt the detainees adapting to jail society components. Sykes hypotheses on hardship are not far-removed regarding states of the jail. There is an ache in entering jail significantly after a detainee conforms to their new home. They have lost their privileges of freedom and are denied from merchandise, administrations, security and the choice of a hetero relationship. Prisoners are dealt with like kids by being advised when to consume, when to work, when to rest and actually when they can utilize the washroom. The offices are a poor environment on the grounds that there are rats and a high danger of ailments because of crowdedness with different prisoners. In the film, one of the new detainees asks Cap tain Hadley when they will consume to which he reacts that you consume when we say you consume. You poop when we say you poo. You piss when we say you piss. This was one of the bitter experiences for Red in the prison. Rehabilitation Recovery is a project and an objective that the punitive framework uses to help detainees come back to society without the dread of relapse. In the past it was accepted that culprits perpetrated unlawful acts in light of the fact that they were apathetic hence the prisoners required to buckle down with the end goal them should change. It was accepted that a solid hard working attitude was specifically associated with positive social conduct; consequently instructing prisoners to buckle down was seen as an approach to change them. It is currently accepted that genuine work can prompt restoring a prisoner in light of the fact that they learn abilities and create great work propensities that can be utilized as a part of society. This can likewise help the prisoners when petitioning parole. Prisoners who buckle down while in jail are seen more great by the parole board, since the need to re-irritate is diminished. Recovery is a science and it began being seen that route in Canada in 1935. It was viewed as that keeping in mind the end goal to restore detainees expert assistance from therapists, specialists and remedial chiefs was required. This functioned admirably until around 1970, when all the rights and activities gatherings began dissenting with the utilization of mobs, killings and prisoner takings. At this point the individuals were requesting a get extreme mentality towards lawbreakers and their wayward kids. After the common turmoil of the 1970s, restoration was brought go into the contemplations of amendments in new ways, it was felt that a few detainees had a place in the group, far from the masters and not bolted away in a correctional facility. Conclusion Jail has been delineated in numerous diverse movies through the years, each of them including Shawshank Redemption, has indicated to the world that jail is appalling. Shawshank Redemption has demonstrated that jail is a fierce place by showing how distinctive guards carry on and treat the detainees, and also delineating the way the prisoners associate with each other and the courses in which they attempt to make their day by day carries on somewhat more tolerable. The film clarifies how detainees change in accordance with jail life from the launch toward the start of their sentence; to restoring the wrongdoer go into typical society and in addition prisonization or regulation the prisoners experience. The film Shawshank Redemption additionally clarified how jail is utilized for discipline purposes and demonstrated that jail can work as though it were a bit of hardware. The media has constantly portrayed jail to be a negative spot and the film The Shawshank Redemption is a prime sample. While there are a few suppositions and suggestions that can be produced using the film about society and its convictions, two appear to emerge. The main moral ramification of the movie is the way to go that society takes a utilitarian perspective of morals. Under a utilitarian methodology, choices are focused around their outcomes (Johnson, 2012, p. 154) and normal rules dont apply in this situation. There are feelings that while certain activities, all by themselves, can be viewed as untrustworthy, the society is eager to view them all the more positively inside a certain setting. Case in point, there is by all accounts an innate requirement for individuals to feel that equity has been carried out, and certain exploitative practices may be adequate in attaining that end. This can be seen throughout the movie. Boggs, the pioneer of the Sisters, is beaten until he is deadened for harming Dufresn. Dufresn escapes from jail and takes $370,000 of sick gotten, laundered cash the whole tim e. Both of these may be viewed as untrustworthy all by themselves, yet the gathering of people is eager to hail both in light of a legitimate concern for equity being served. We see this same utilitarian view in the utilization of force in the film. The Warden and the guards misuse their energy to varying degrees and the group of onlookers is intended to grimace and look askance. Then again, when Dufresn misuses his budgetary capacities in an illicit action and escape or Red takes part in carrying things into the jail, the crowd praises. In a vacuum, the majority of the demonstrations are dishonest. Notwithstanding, the activities of Dufresn and Red appear to serve, in the eyes if the group of onlookers, to offset a percentage of the ill-uses of force and development the reason for equity. Therefore, they are taken a gander at as being moral in as much as they helped meet the moral standard of equity in spite of being dishonest themselves. The second ramification is the force of moral administration. This can be seen in the response of the two fundamental gatherings, the administering force of the Warden and the guards and Dufresns gathering, to their particular pioneers. On account of the guards, we see the impact that the administration of the Warden and Hadley has over them. As was said prior, the guards are roused to act in pitiless ways towards the detainees when around the Warden and Hadley, yet we see more moral and altruistic collaborations when the guards are distant from everyone else with the detainees. Indeed Hadley changes once the spell of the Wardens initiative is broken, sobbing on and on when he is captured. Hence, one sees the length and force of the shadow that the Warden throws. Rather than the guards, one sees the positive impact that Dufresn has on Red and other detainees in their gathering. When he arrives, they are useful and sober minded, surrendered to the way things are. Notwithstanding, Dufresn demonstrates to them that moral conduct and rightness can even now exist. This starts with their initially meeting, when he requests the name of a detainee who was beaten to death. This appears immaterial to the others however serves as an image of Dufresn bringing the morals of the outside world with him into the jail. Notwithstanding all that happens amid his stay, he never loses those morals. He never loses trust. Furthermore, all the while, he raises the moral level and level of trust for all parts of the gathering. Both men lead their particular gatherings through their activities and choice making. Ones activities lead in an unscrupulous way and the other in a more moral one. Through this, it is apparent exactly how persuasive the moral choices of a pioneer and the shadow or light they cast can be (Johnson, 2012). In this way, against the setting of the microcosmic subculture of Shawshank Prison, one sees the essentialness of equity and reasonable utilization of force to American culture. The saying Power adulterates and total force ruins completely, (Johnson, 2012, p. 11) turns into a reality inside the jail dividers and the characters are left to comprehend it. Eventually and incidentally, it is the apparently exploitative deeds of Dufresn and Red (who breaks his parole to go to Mexico) that restore the parity of equity and power that the crowd is looking for and, in doing along these lines, uncover the paramount part that these moral standards play in the public eye. The Road To Success English Language Essay

The Road To Success English Language Essay The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called Failure, a loop called Confusion, speed bumps called Friends, red lights called Enemies, caution lights called Family. You will have flats called Jobs. But, if you have a spare called Determination, an engine called Perseverance, insurance called Faith, you will make it to a place called Success. (Bro. Emil Andrew dela Rosa) Success is the thing that is sought by all people and it is the completion of anything intended, in other words success is finishing what you planned to do (Watson, John) , people are asking, what is the road to success? There are no direct answers to this question; because success has many different factors determine how an individual will be up for success (colin turner, 2006). Laing Burns, Jr. said Success often comes to those who have the aptitude to see way down the road. (Laing Burns, Jr) In order to achieve success, there are some methods and skills to achieve success, first set your goal, second develop yourself and explore your abilities, third organize your time and self management. Everyone must have purpose for his life, so first of all a method and skill to achieve success is to setting your goal. In order to determine the goals that matter to you, and you will use in your plan, make a list of everything you wish or dream to achieve in various areas of your life thought this dream whatever small or large and type it on paper. Writing all your goals on paper at this stage will expand the horizon of your thinking, so do not try thinking and how you will achieve these goals; because thinking will reduce and limit your belief in your ability to achieve them. Also, when you write a list of your goals you will start to see new opportunities in life were not see before, and you will find yourself attracted to these opportunities. (colin turner, 2006) Its important to plan for each goal so focus on what you really want to accomplish and the reasons why you need to accomplish them and list your goals through prioritization, also, focus on the different areas of your l ife and do not allow fear to stand in your way. Do not focus on your goals at the same time and try to separate them and do each one alone .first, do the most important one and then do the next. (Ashley Ann Serafin, 2009) Moreover, determine your ability to achieve your goals and ask yourself if you are able to commitment to the goals you set for yourself no matter what kind of goals? So dont write goals and you cant do it or you dont have ability to do it. Sometimes you will notice that you will not achieve the goal the way that you planned. And at times youll find that your experience for some creative plans and the actual moment of taking some steps lead you in directions never imagined before, and are often greater and more successful than those that you put it in your plans. This is because the plans were based on the current ability and the ability change over time. (colin turner, 2006) Also, its important to do your best to follow your goals. Because whenever you see your goa l in front of you and you feel that it negotiable to achieve and be realistic, you will persevere to achieve and move away from the postponement. Experts say that the more you feel that your goal is real; it could increase the likelihood of success in achieving this goal. (Abdulla, 2010) In addition, also explore your abilities and develop yourself is one more method to achieve success. To discover your abilities, ask yourself I am strong in what? What is my strength and what are my skills? What I concentrate upon? How do I increase my abilities? Furthermore, you must read and learn and develop yourself always and never. Learn about yourself and your abilities and learn from life. Also, applied what you learned, so you will not bring new information only if you applied the old, and also you cannot be treated yourself, unless you learn from your attitude. (Kazem Ameli) Moreover, you should identify your weaknesses. Usually, no one really wants to admit weakness points but, you cant escape from your weaknesses; you must fight it. However, weaknesses too can be strengths if put correctly and your weakness should come out as a problem which is almost solved not a critical and hopeless trait that cannot be helped. (Identify your Strengths and Weaknesses CVTips.com)The pu rpose of the knowing the weaknesses are not to induce misery or frustration, but it opens the door for a great deal of awareness and improvement. So, dont shy away from weaknesses. Instead, look at things objectively, recognize and admit weaknesses and make conscious decisions on what to do about them. (Ben Yoskovitz, 2007) Besides, the more self confidence you have, the more likely it is youll succeed .So, you should have Self-confidence. Although many of the factors affecting self confidence are outside your control, there are a number of things you can do to build self confidence like focus on contribution, work out, speak up, compliment other people and sit in the front row and many other ways. (Erin. Editor, Pick The Brain) Accepting advice is not always easy. There is Proverb says, Listen to advice and accept correction, then in the end you will be wise. (Frà ©dà ©rick Jà ©zà ©gou, 2010) So, think about the advice that giving to you, Say thank you; someone has taken time t o share their thoughts with you and if its good advice, go and start implementing it. Moreover, you must learn from your mistakes, and recognize that you fall in it. And you should have the courage to admit it to yourself and others and must accept that mistake and not blame yourself when you fall in line. Also, challenge those obstacles that stand before you and keep away from your negative thoughts. If you fall, Arise, then try again and do not remain where you fell, and not duplicate the wrong. (Girls of Wisdom, 2010) No success comes without perseverance. Successful are not better or smarter or stronger from others, but they had their perseverance and their determination distinctive. (Abdullah Bin Bakhit, 2006) Persistence is the quality of never giving up when you face challenges, of holding on to your dream, of refusing to be discouraged no matter what the odds, no matter what happens. Therefore, you should be Persistent and ambitious as you want. (Royane Real, 2005) Renewal a nd creativity go hand in hand, which are essential to every person, like the daily routine boring absorbs the energy and enthusiasm of the person; therefore, you have to renew your life, you will find that successful are keen to develop yourself through several ways, and are keen to develop your methods to achieve what you want. (Abdullah Al Muhairi, 2006) Another method and skill to achieve success is organizing your time and self management. It is mean ways by which one had to make the most of his time in achieving its objectives and create a balance in his life between obligations and desires and goals. Therefore, we must develop a plan to become a time management easy and accessible. You should familiarize yourself with the comparison between the priorities, because the opportunities and obligations may at the same time brings, which one would you choose? In short, choose what it deems useful to you in your future at the same time is not harmful to others. (Eugene Jrisman Jeffrey Mayer, 2008) Furthermore, you can use of your leisure time by many ways such as reading magazine articles or some books, review your list of goals, break out your notebook and start develop list of ideas for what you want to do, get prepped for your next task and certainly do not forget to take some time for yourself to relax and make yourself ready to wo rk again. (Leo Babauta, 2010) Also, focus and do not confuse your mind in more than one direction, if you take this advice and applied it, youll find a lot of time to do other things more important and urgent. (Eugene Jrisman Jeffrey Mayer, 2008) Moreover, manage your time, by draw up a daily schedule, where you should write the things you plan doing that particular day. Try to pick realistic time plans for those things and live an extra error margin, just not too big. (Mike , 2010 ) Also, draw up a weekly schedule, and put the necessary targets first, as self-development objectives through courses or reading, or family goals like go out to trip. Besides, use modern techniques to seize opportunities and achieve success, as well as to organize and saves your time such as the Internet, computer and other. (Eugene Jrisman Jeffrey Mayer, 2008) To sum up, the above discussed methods and skills that will help you to achieve success by setting goal and achieving them effectively and efficiently, and staying focused by prioritizing your main aims. Also, help you exploring your capabilities and develop yourself through reading and learning and many other ways, and help to organize your time and self management. Thus, the road to success has many difficulties and bumps, but you are able to continue it with determination and resolve. And you can be a successful individual in life by following a systematic and simple lifestyle.

Cocaine :: essays research papers

Cocaine Early on in his career, Eric Clapton seemed to have a difficult time sticking to one band. He played with the Yardbirds, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Blind Faith, Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, and Cream. But throughout all the time he spent with each of those bands, no solo work was ever thought of until 1970. It was in 1970 that Clapton launched his solo career with his self-titled debut album. His first album had only one real hit, so to speak, with â€Å"After Midnight,† but is still regarded as one of his better works. Many felt that it was more of a D&B&F album,that merely featured Clapton on guitar. This was due to the amount of time he had been spending with the group, after he went â€Å"solo.† Before his debut album was ever released, Clapton had formed a band with some of the D&B&F members called Derek and the Dominos. He played with them for most of 1970. In 1971 and 1972, Clapton was not heard from, at least not musically, as he was battling a heroin addiction that cut two years out of his early work. But, on January 13, 1973, Clapton stormed back with a live performance at the Rainbow Theatre in London. That spawned his next record, â€Å"Eric Clapton’s Rainbow Concert,† which, obviously, featured live performances. It wasn’t until a few months later, in 1974, when Clapton had a substantial solo career, with the release of â€Å"461 Ocean Boulevard.† That record had the number one single, â€Å"I Shot the Sheriff,† which is still a popular song to this day. In 1975 and 1976, Clapton released three records, as follow-ups to â€Å"461 Ocean Boulevard.† â€Å"There’s One in Every Crowd,† â€Å" E.C. Was Here,† (live) and â€Å"No Reason to Cry,† respectively, had no where near the success of his previous album. But, thankfully, in 1977, Clapton released â€Å"Slowhand,† which had mega-hits with â€Å"Lay Down Sally,† â€Å"Wonderful Tonight,† (which was a million seller) and â€Å"Cocaine.† Originally written by country-rocker J.J. Cale (who also wrote â€Å"After Midnight†), â€Å"Cocaine† was a bluesy-soul-rock song that, essentially, was about what Cocaine can do for you, and gave tips about what to do while high on Cocaine. If you wanna hang out you’ve got to take her out; cocaine. If you wanna get down, down on the ground; cocaine. She don’t lie, she don’t lie, she don’t; cocaine. If you got bad news, you wanna kick them blues; cocaine.

At the time of its initial purchase approximately six years ago (with BackupExec 7.x), the server infrastructure consisted of approximately 80 clients with one TB of data captured on a weekly full backup. This small-business level backup solution provided a good fit for the environment and served the company’s data protection needs well. Accordingly, we continued to leverage BackupExec 8.x – 9.x in our organization as the network infrastructure expanded though out the years. The server environment has now grown to the point where there are 370 servers with approximately 16 Terabytes of data captured on a weekly full backup. In light of this, meeting the established backup/restore service agreement is becoming increasingly challenging. Some of the functionality/features required to address this challenge includes: -The ability to direct multiple streams of data to one media device simultaneously (Multiplexing). -A provision for re-starting backup jobs from the point at which they failed (Checkpointing). -Descriptive reporting on backup media content. -Automation of Media Duplication and Vaulting tasks. -Compete compatibility with SANs and NAS support As a result, Production Services has evaluated a number of solutions from the leading backup software manufacturers. The final list was narrowed down to three competitors we thought could best meet our outlined requirements. They are: Veritas NetBackup, Legato Networker, and Commvault Galaxy. The tables below list the details of the evaluations. 4  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Options The reviews of the three options are listed in the following table: 4.1  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Option # 1: Veritas NetBackup Option Table # 1: Pros  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Cons Administrative/management tasks performed from a centralized location. (Familiar Microsoft Management Console style interface). Provides the ability to browse resources through Graphical User Interface when creating backup and restore jobs, reducing the possibility of typographical errors. Provides straightforward media management. Multiple media erased, moved and exported at once.

Heroes and Cowards in A Farewell To Arms, by Ernest Hemingway :: A Farewell To Arms

   War creates only two types of men: heroes and cowards.   In the book, A Farewell To Arms by Ernest Hemingway, Mr. Frederic Henry was an American Lieutenant ambulance driver in the Italian Army. "The army was staying in Gorizia, a little town that had been captured by the Italian army" (5). The town looked across a river and the plains to the mountains. There was fighting going on in those mountains, only a mile away. One evening when Frederic came in the house after doing some work on his ambulance, his friend Rinaldi took him to a hospital to meet a nurse who was a friend of Rinaldi's. Frederic thought that Miss Barkley was very pretty and good looking. Frederic started seeing Miss Catherine Barkley on a regular basis. "Frederic got orders to take two ambulances and three other drivers and go to the war front, up the river in Plava" (54). They were to pick up as many of the wounded as they could and deliver them to the hospitals where their papers said to take them. When he got up to Plava late in the evening, Frederic found out that there was a plan for a military strike that night. They were ordered to stay there and wait for the strike to take place before they left, so they wouldn't get hit by the bombardment. All of the drivers were to stay in a dugout in the riverbank while the strike was going on. There was all kinds of gun fire and bomb shells being shot back and forth. "The drivers were all in the dugout eating noodles and cheese while drinking wine" (55), when a bomb shell hit the dugout, killing one of the drivers and wounding Mr. Henry as well as one of the other drivers. Frederic was hit in the legs by the objects that were in the bomb, one of his knees was blown down around his shin. One of the drivers took him to the medical tents to get bandages put on his legs until they could get him back to a hospital. "The army sent Frederic to an American hospital in Milan" (77). This hospital had just been built and they needed nurses there. The hospital in Gorizia transferred Miss Barkley to the hospital in Milan. She was one of the nurses looking after Frederic while he was in the hospital.

Religion and Ethnic Diversity Essay

Religion and Ethnic Diversity Buddhism was first found in India about 2,500 years ago. Buddhism is an increasing popular religion that continues to be the leading religion in the Far East. Buddhism has advanced over to a large amount of countries that have embraced a vast variety of customs, rituals, beliefs, and practices. Buddhist’s do not believe that a God created Earth. Buddha is the only Master, Buddhist’s believe in. Buddhist’s acknowledge that the ultimate purpose of life is to establish consideration for all living beings without inequity and to perform for their piece, good, and happiness. Buddhist’s have incorporated the Four Noble Truths in their lives, which are Dukkha, SamudÄ ya, Nirodha, and Magga. According to â€Å"The Four Noble Truths† (2013), † 1.The truth of suffering (Dukkha). 2. The truth of the origin of suffering (SamudÄ ya). 3. The truth of the cessation of suffering (Nirodha). 4.The truth of the path to the cessation of suffering (Magga),â₠¬ (The Four Noble Truths). Buddhism does not share common characteristics with other religion groups. Buddhism is, however, receptive to other religions and beliefs. This religious group acknowledges the way other religions teach those involved. These individuals do not believe in a God. It is a belief system like all other religious groups. There are individuals who do not accept Buddhist and believe that those who do are not going to heaven. Others who refuse to understand Buddhism and how it works dismiss it completely because it is not what they believe in. Even though Buddhism is not America’s most practiced religion, its beliefs and ideas have been passed into American culture. It has helped blend American culture. Today there is a large amount of Buddhist’s who contribute to promoting peace amongst one another, reaching out to those who are in prison and who are homeless, and some even do advocacy for the environment. Buddhist’s experience hate just like other people in other religions. In 2003, Chung Tai Buddhist Group applied to construct a meditation and worship center in the city of Walnut, California, but the application was later denied. Not only did the City Planning Commission deny the application, but also residents were against building the center. Residents disputed against the plan because they believed there would be an increase in traffic and noise. A few years later the City Planning Commission approved an application to build on some of the area Chung Tai had prepared to use. In 2010, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit stating the city of Walnut; California treated the group unreasonably while dealing with the permit to build the worship and meditation center for Chung Tai Buddhist Group. The Department of Justice came to the conclusion that it was religious discrimination. After learning what Buddhism is and where it originated from allows me to understand it more. I now know that it is not only about humming and repeating a few words in another language, but also learning how to live a happier, more pure life even with the struggles and unfortunate events that can occur. Not only that, but respecting every living thing as it is. The Chinese are quite different from other racial/ethnic groups. The two most common languages used in China are Mandarin or Cantonese. Mandarin is t he government, education, and media’s main language that is used in China. Known as the ‘common language,’ mandarin is the first language that is spoken. The Chinese are a combined society with the urge to associate themselves in groups, whether it is to their work group, family, country, or associates. The Chinese depend on non-verbal communication like tone of voice and facial expression, to reveal what other maybe thinking or feeling. The Chinese believe in an ethical system known as Confucianism. Confucianism is a set up of ethics and behaviors that signify responsibilities of people towards one another based on their relationship. The Chinese have and continue to contribute to American culture in many ways. Many Americans embrace Chinese religions. Converting to Buddhism and so many other Asian religions. In the 1800’s Chinese immigrants helped working with the gold miners. These men helped construct the intercontinental railway. The Chinese have brought their recipes to American cultures that have been passed down from generation to generation. The Chinese brought their customs, language, and social organization into Amer ican culture. On May 6, 1882 the Chinese Exclusion Act was signed into law. It was brought about in reply to economic concerns in the West Coast, where Americans imputed unemployment and withheld wages to Chinese workers. Americans at the time viewed the Chinese as racially indifferent. Even though the act was repealed during World War II it only allowed 105 Chinese immigrants per year into the United States,  which still showed prejudice against the Chinese. I believe the source of prejudice against the Chinese was economic benefit. A large amount of Chinese immigrants came to the states to seek employment opportunities, but were denied at times because of the direct need for employment. I do believe what I have learned about the Chinese helped me understand this group. I learned what a big contribution to our culture they provided. I also learned that because of their great impact on American culture some individuals take those same customs and values and incorporate them into their own lives. The Chinese and Buddhist experienced similar situations dealing with discrimination because they were both persecuted for being who they are as individuals. Neither one of these groups tried to be something they were not, so they were prejudged and treated unfairly. These groups experienced different situations dealing with discrimination because the Chinese were discriminated against based on real and observed racial dissimilarities. Buddhistâ₠¬â„¢s were discriminated against based on who or what they believed in. Buddhist’s were also discriminated against because of their feeling towards their religion and those belonging to other religious groups. Discrimination towards these two groups and the many others is wrong. It has restricted these groups from opportunities that should have always been available to not only one group, but also all groups of individuals regardless of their appearance or their beliefs. 1.
